The Society of Acute Medicine (SAM) and the UKAOS have formed a joint working group to develop acute oncology care as an integral element of acute medicine. There are already some terrific acute oncology initiatives being led by Acute Medicine including supporting ambulatory management in SDEC units and leading on the MUO and CUP pathways.

The group is being led by one of our enthusiastic Acute Medical Consultant members:   Dr Radha Selvaratnam is the current chair of this group

Highlights iof this group during 2023 are:

  • Mapping of acute medicine oncology setup and knowledge in the UK - questioned embedded in SAMBA audit. Data collection completed. Outcome shared through submission in Clinical Medcine Vol 23 Issue 6.
  • Collaboration with NHS Elect and NHSE in producing SDEC pathways and processes that focuses on acute omcology patient care and experience. AOS specific pathways to be integrated into MHS Elect AEC directory – underway.
  • Cancer SDEC session presented at BAAEC conference in February 2023.
  • Trainees & Recruitment - Target to increase the number of Acute Medicine trainees sub-specialising in Acute Oncology increasing from 4-8 to 10-16 in the next 2-3 years. We have targeted all the trainee events. Trainee Seminar in June had its first presentation as Acute Oncology

This toolkit aims to support acute and general medical clinicians caring for patients with cancer who have been admitted to acute care. It outlines key presentations, pathways and complications in acute oncology. It provides service recommendations for acute hospitals and acute oncology services. All physicians should also be clear on the meaning and use of terms used in oncology. Members of the UKAOS AM group were involved in the development of this toolkit.
