  • Abdominal ascites is the accumulation of protein rich fluid in the peritoneal cavity and can be classed as an exudate or transudate.
  • Ascites typically develops in the setting of recurrent and/or advanced cancer, the commonest sites being ovarian, breast and colo-rectal.
