Dear all

In the next 2 to 3 weeks, a survey will be sent out as phase II of an ED/AOS mapping project. Further explanation about this second phase is below.

AOS/ ED mapping project (phase II): Completion survey:

The ED/ AOS mapping project is a project looking at the key elements of the current pathways for oncology patients (type I, II and III) through UK emergency departments.

Phase I of the ED/AOS mapping project sent out mapping templates to 12 sites across, England, Wales and Ireland. The templates were sent to sites with an ED and not to tertiary cancer centres. This was to identify:

The main challenges in the AOS/ED pathway?

  • What good might look like?
  • Were there any innovations to share?
  • Who or how might we develop solutions?

The templates were completed and returned by 11 sites with the following questions:

1. What pre-ED access/advice is available before ED and are there alternatives to ED?

2. ED attendance: How are oncology patients identified or flagged?

3. Role of the ED nurse: Triage and oncology flagging or streaming?

4. ED medical assessment: Who does this, average time to review, oncology experience?

5. Cancer Nursing or cancer expertise in ED?

6. ED environment: Are there specific side rooms? / Shielding areas?

7. ED onward referral: Are there streaming pathways away from ED? safety netting and awareness by AOS?

A “top 10 wish list “from all 11 sites who took part in the original template questionnaire felt that acute oncology at the “front door” is needed.

Following on from phase I of the project the UKAOS Nursing subgroup would like to shine a spotlight on the ED journey for cancer patients and we would value your input in completing a survey to look at AO at the “front door”. This is part II of the project and the results of this will then lead to further sharing of good practice as well as national guidance. Part II of the project will include Scottish sites ( Scottish sites have now been identified)

The questionnaire will take 5 to 10 minutes to complete.

About the survey:

What does taking part involve?

  •  The survey can be completed via QR code or link.
  •  There are no right or wrong answers.

Who should complete the survey?

The survey has been designed to collect information from AO teams to further identify what types of alert systems are in place to flag patients with cancer who attend UK emergency departments as well as the main challenges . It will also explore how AO / ED teams gain access to cancer expertise and education on acute oncology. It can be completed by any member of the acute oncology team.
