Sophie Needham British Journal of Nursing Oncology Nurse of the Year 2022 speaks with Alison Taylor about her enthusiasm for Acute Oncology nursing and the project that led to her nomination for this prestigious award.

Sophie is has worked in acute and critical care for over 10 years. She is currently an acute oncology CNS at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital and has worked in this role since 2019.

She completed her nursing training in 2008 at Manchester Metropolitan University with clinical placements at Oldham hospital where she took up her first nursing role. She worked there for 4 years before taking a career break and travelling to Australia where she worked for 6 months. She then took a post in Wythenshawe AICU, before moving to Wigan as  lung CNS. In 2019 she started work in Southport as the AO CNS. She has completed additional courses in acute oncology and palliative care, and is currently studying for her Masters.

 Sophies SPINE project has led to imrpovement in the recognition and management of MSCC  localy and regionally, and won the best poster award at the UKONS conference in 2021
